Generative Design

What happens to design when AI joins the process? My master thesis maps where AI changes the work of designers and makes the point with a textile that could only exist through it: a woven pattern generated from your personal music taste.

Overview

The idea

AI is quickly becoming part of every design workflow. Rather than asking whether it will replace designers, I looked at how it shifts our role: which tasks it takes over, where it falls short, and which new possibilities it opens up. Above all: products that are more complex and truly personal.

There is no doubt that with the rapid advancement of AI, its use will become more prevalent and ultimately essential, becoming a crucial part of the design process.

The pattern

Every song gets an emotional profile: 13 emotions and their intensity, each mapped to a color based on research into music and emotion. The proportions of those colors form a fingerprint of the track.

A neutral circle is the base shape. Complexity, dynamics and tempo deform it, and faster songs bend it further. Put many songs together and you get a pattern that is unmistakably yours.

Weaving

I chose weaving for its cultural value, its tactility and its longevity. It is slower than digital printing and more limited in color. Combined with AI, though, new patterns can be generated and produced efficiently.

Conclusion

The research question: can AI-based design lead to better products? AI will play a crucial role, yet it may stay behind human designers in creativity and foresight.

Designers remain essential, shifting from creators to curators and leaders of a process heavily shaped by AI. The woven piece shows what that collaboration can make possible.
